My Clear Passage Experience

Clear Passage is a physical therapy clinic that specializes in breaking up adhesions through manual therapy. Therapists at Clear Passage use what has been coined the Wurn Technique, named after its founders Larry and Balinda Wurn, to break up adhesions in the abdomen. Adhesions are a type of scar tissue that form when the body heals from injury, surgery, infection, inflammation, accidents, and falls. Although adhesions form inside the body to help the body heal, they can also create strong bonds between your organs that squeeze nerves, organs, and joints creating pain and dysfunction. Adhesions are made up of collagen, so they are unable to be seen on any sort of imaging device.

I first learned about Clear Passage from a podcast I listened to by Dr. Michael Ruschio on his channel Dr. Ruschio Radio. If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to head over to his Podcast and listen to episode 41 “Abdominal Adhesions; an Overlooked Cause of SIBO, IBS, Gut Pain, Infertility and More”. Rebecca Coomes has also done an excellent segment about Clear Passage on her podcast, The Healthy Gut, and you can listen to it by searching for episode 24, “Adhesions and SIBO”.

I became interested in Clear Passage because of the attention it received for helping patients diagnosed with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), which I myself had been diagnosed with. SIBO causes the formation of adhesions within the digestive tract that not only cause pain, but also create pockets that trap the bacterial overgrowth making the condition difficult to treat. After listening to the podcasts mentioned above, I learned that I most likely had multiple sources of adhesions, given my past medical history (appendectomy, laparoscopy, and broken tail bone twice). I’ve had abdominal pain for as long as I can remember, and not once has any medical professional mentioned that it may be attributed to adhesions.

After doing more research into Clear Passage I learned that their technique was also used to treat adhesions caused by endometriosis and infertility. HELLO! This was a wake-up call and I knew I had to make getting this therapy a priority if I was going to heal myself naturally after all I had been through. If you would like to know more about my medical history you can do so by reading My Journey to AIP here and My Fertility Journey here.

So, I decided to book the recommended 20-hours of therapy (spread out over the course of 5 days) at their St. Louis, Missouri location. My husband and I drove down from Toronto, because we read that flying could potentially cause some discomfort after the treatment. I spent the week working with my oh so lovely PT, Sharon Hepburn, breaking up my many adhesions. The experience was life changing. Sharon not only performed miracles on my abdominal adhesions, leaving me more flexible and pain free than ever before, but she was also kind, welcoming, and so passionate about helping her patients.

I cannot say that since being treated all my pain has disappeared and I have been magically healed. I will however commit to saying that I really do feel like a different person. My abdominal bloating and discomfort have reduced dramatically, I’ve remained SIBO free, my bowel movements have improved, and the aches and pains from my endometriosis have let up considerably. These positive changes have also supported my mental health and I finally began feeling like I was coming out of the fog. Only time will tell what effects this therapy had on my hormones and fertility, but either way I’ve reaped enough benefits to confidently say Clear Passage was worth every single penny.
